UK travellers are enraged over British insurer Aviva’s decision to add £10 to the cost of travel insurance from July 1, to compensate for any costs associated with the disruption caused by the ash cloud. The additional cost of £10 would be applicable only to those who have availed of an annual insurance cover. On the other hand, individuals who have booked for single trip insurance will only be charged an additional amount of £5.
Experts believe that Aviva’s pronouncement to append extra charges would pave the way for other insurance companies in the UK to follow suit.
A sense of pandemonium has reigned over the UK travel insurance sector since the ash cloud crisis broke out. Many travellers are still awaiting insurance compensation, despite being automatically covered for such calamities.
Though a singular opinion on how long the ash cloud crisis will continue is yet to be arrived at, experts believe that such volcanic activities continue for up to 18 months. If this is the case, the profitability of airline companies and the insurance cost for travellers, are both bound to be impacted.
